Parenting Through Growth: Trust, Power, and Letting Go

Growing Pains & The Balance of Trust

Growth is rarely comfortable—whether it's our children navigating their own challenges or us, as parents, learning to let go. Too often, we focus so much on who our children will become that we forget to honor who they are right now.

Trust plays a key role in this journey. As parents, we want to protect and guide our children, but sometimes the best way to help them grow is by giving them the space to experience life fully—successes, mistakes, and all.

Power Over vs. Power With Parenting

There are two fundamental approaches to parenting:

🔴 Power Over – Parenting through control. In this approach, the focus is on stopping behaviors rather than understanding them. The adult dictates, the child obeys, and love often feels conditional. Many of us grew up hearing phrases like “I’m the adult, and you’re the child!”—reinforcing an old belief system where the parent always "wins."

🟢 Power With – Parenting through connection. This style is built on curiosity, openness, and mutual trust. Instead of exerting control, the parent and child work together to solve problems. It’s not you vs. your child—it’s you and your child vs. the problem.

Trusting the Process (Even When It’s Hard!)

Children grow the most when we allow them to experience the full arc of a situation. That means:
✔️ Letting them navigate tough moments instead of rushing in to fix things.
✔️ Giving them space to learn from mistakes—without fear of losing our love or respect.
✔️ Encouraging decision-making skills, even if it means trial and error.

It’s not about forcing compliance with bribes or manipulation—it’s about raising kids who feel safe, heard, and respected. That trust is what helps them make strong choices, even when we’re not there to guide them.

Parenting is a Self-Reflective Process

This work is ongoing because parenting is growth—for both of us. No one has it all figured out, and that’s okay. The key is to stay open, stay curious, and embrace the journey alongside our children.
